Cooking Games
As its name implies a cooking game is a game that involves the preparation of
food through some kind of gameplay, which can vary from game to game. These
online games can be found in thousands of websites, and they are aimed at
children. It’s a great way for children to understand how food is prepared and
the work that it involves.
We’ll mention some games that are fun to play and can be a safe activity that is
both fun and educational for you and your children.
Backwards Cooking Games
While most cooking games give you a selection of ingredients in order to prepare
a dish or delicacy, this type of game does the opposite. It gives you a dish,
and you have to figure out the ingredients that were needed to prepare it. It’s
not as simple as it sounds, specially if you’re timed or are playing against
others. It’s also great for children who are into real life cooking.
Combination Meals
This is a game that encourages a bit more creativity than the rest. Instead of
using ingredients and courses of a single meal, you can mix several elements
from different meals, for an all around meal that will work at any time. Of
course, you can also play it for laughs and fun, and serve those enchiladas with
a fries side dish, and a strawberry milkshake. It’s up to you whether you want
to make your friends water their mouths or laugh on their chairs.
Nintendo’s Cooking Mama
Cooking Mama is Nintendo’s addition to the cooking game category. It was
designed for the latest of Nintendo’s portable video game consoles, the Nintendo
DS. In this game, you try your luck at preparing over 70 of “Mama’s” dishes. For
each recipe, you have to follow several steps in order to become as good as
“Mama.” These steps depend on each recipe, but they involve chopping vegetables,
stirring, flipping meat on a grill, etc. The best part is that you use the video
game console’s touch screen and the stylus, so it really feels like the real
thing! No buttons to press at all. For example, if you want to chop an onion,
you tap the touch screen. Each tap cuts one slice off the onion. It makes the
whole game so addicting that your wrists will be sore for days. You also have a
time limit for each recipe, so you’ll have to practice to get it right under the
time allotment. At the end of your dish, you’ll be graded on how well you
performed. Definitely a game for the chef inside you.
You can find similar games on Internet. These games start with basic dishes and
recipes, and you can unlock new and more complex ones as you prove your mastery
of the easy ones. Some games will feature a single dish, while the most complex
ones will have you prepare an entire meal.
Aside from the fun they involve, they are also a great tool for teaching
children about food, where it comes from, and the work it takes to prepare it.
It can also be a great way to set them up for real cooking.
